While we may have two hands, we often feel that we lack the capacity to extend one to others. We view reaching out as an overwhelming burden. So, we struggle on alone. Reaching out to another does not imply having to "do" anything or "give" anything to anyone, other than our attention. Sometimes, reaching out is offering a friendly wave to a neighbor, or stroking a kitten, or holding a door open for a stranger. Small gestures done with love bring joy. I am not afraid, I was born to do this. -Joan of Arc How many of us are afraid to live life as ourselves? How often do we present the world with an edited version of who we are? A version which conforms to the expectations of our culture, our society, our family, our friends and our own thoughts about who we "should" be. If we base our lives solely upon ideas of who we "should" be and what we "should" do, we create false identities. Which, we find awkward and unsatisfying because they lack integrity, joy and spontaneity. When we deny who we really are, and how we really feel, we willingly dismiss our own unique expression as being valid. And, diminish the beauty that we bring to this world. A challenge is laid before us, something unbelievably difficult and we wish we could run away. Sometimes, we do. Sometimes we can’t. Facing the challenges life presents us with is courageous. It is equally courageous to recognize the need for retreat, in order to regroup or retool for the task. No one can outrun difficulty. Being a superhero is not about overcoming insurmountable odds. It is not about inhabiting a lofty position in which all problems are transcended. Being a superhero is about doing the best that you can in your current situation with the resources at hand. That is all. That is the secret formula for spontaneous superhero generation. No additional ingredients are required. It just YOU. Do the best that you can do, today, Superhero.
